Max: I canât wait to wake up with you two again.
I keep my eyes on the phone for a bit, then raise them slowly to look at Candice. She waves her hand, indicating for me to start talking.
I sigh and lean back on the couch. âWhat do you want to know?â
She makes a sound in her throat, like she canât believe I asked her that. âUmmmâ¦everything. Why is Max wanting to wake up with you? Max, of all people! Joyceâs brother! And is he talking about Mr. Newman? What happened? I didnât think you liked either one of them.â
Again, I sigh. Sheâs already seen the text, so thereâs no reason to deny anything. Sheâs not stupid. The only reason Max would say he wanted to wake up with us again is if he went to sleep with us at some point. So, I donât insult her intelligence. I tell her everything about my trip to Virginia. About the case, about Tyler, about the big win. How Max told me he didnât like me because he wanted me, same with Caleb. About the night after the win, how I goaded Caleb, but I skip all the details. How, after that night, we hung out for the last week we were there and agreed to continue when we got home.
When Iâm done, sheâs sitting there with her mouth open, in utter disbelief. Itâs almost like she doesnât know what to say. She stutters over her words then sits back for a second, collecting her thoughts. I know itâs a lot. Hell, it was a lot for me and I lived it. I donât rush her though. She has to wrap her mind around it, I guess.
âAre you gay?â she blurts and smacks her hand over her mouth. I laugh, relieved she didnât judge me, and pull her hand down. No reason for her to be embarrassed. Weâre family. She can ask me anything.
âNo, not gay. I like women. And I like Caleb and Max. I find other men attractive, now that I actually look at them. So bi would fit better.â
She nods, looking off in the distance. âAnd, you donâtâ¦mindâ¦whatâs happening? Youâre not freaking out?â
I smirk, rubbing my hands together. âNo, Iâm not. It was a shock that I would actually like it. I was feeling an attraction to both of them the whole time we were in Virginia. By the time I accepted it, I wanted to explore it. It was scary, but we were drinking, so it made it easier to let myself go. After that, we were having too much fun for me to really think about it. I donât mind it. I like it.â
Candice is looking at me like Iâm a different person. I donât know if itâs good or bad. âWhat about Joyce?â
Giving her a look, I ask, âWhat about her?â
âI mean, youâre fucking her brother. You donât think thatâs a problem?â
âNah, I donât. Weâre all grown adults. And she cheated and left me. She has no say in who I suck or fuck.
